Engine Bay
Current: The engine bay has evolved a lot since I have owned the car. We'll begin with the brilliant engine swap completed by Carl Crawford in Champaign, Illinois, at Speed-Source in 2003. The major power modifications are: - 1992 Toyota MR2 JDM 3SGTE 2.0L engine - GT3040R (GT3082R) Turbo - Tial 40mm Wastegate - matching Tial BOV - Speed-Source custom parts: turbo manifold, 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" plumbing, motor mounts, under-car intercooler scoop, and shift bushings and lines. - Profec B boost controller and HKS fuel-cut defender - Walbro 255 LPH fuel pump This is what the engine bay looked like when I arrived:
Here is Carl's compact custom turbo manifold: I added the custom cold air intake scoop in the left rear quarter panel, and installed the MSD ignition system: The oil filter was relocated to a cooler area to decrease oil temperature, increase oil capacity, and for ease of oil changes using a big Tundra V8 filter. The lines that came with the relocation kit were poor quality, so I had some stainless-steel/teflon hoses custom made, wrapped at the lower ends with fiberglass high-heat wrap and tape, and extra guards where there might be contact: I dremelled the passenger side engine lid section to provide functional venting, and installed a pair of pusher fans: The large heavy lid latch was removed to allow for the swap to fit, and so I made a new custom low-profile latch, stealing one from a Corolla:
I added some more recent paint and a new oil pressure sender setup to go to my oil pressure gauge due to a leak:
I then relocated the filler neck of the coolant tree since the tubing was touching it, and replaced the GM style cap with a new Ford model eerily similar to Toyota's, with 16 psi (about the same as factory which is 1.1 BAR). This solved a sputtering coolant overflow issue and a leak at the cap as well:
Currently (2012) I am making a custom sidefeed intake manifold, featuring the sidefeed runners from the 3sgelc Celica, with an updated plenum design for distribution and flow. Notice the eight runners, I am not only keeping the TVIS system, I have designed an RPM-based TVIS control system using a powerful servo (see Current Performance Projects), which allows me to set opening and closing parameters from my iTouch:
Then (2013) I undertook the making of a new A2W intercooler (more pics and details can be found in Intercooler) with smooth end-tanks, new 4" intake, Lincoln 70mm TB, catch-can, and short tubing. Note that I am going BOV-less (no bypass or blow-off valve), and the MSD Ingintion system was relocated to the trunk along with a new J&S Interceptor Safeguard Knock Control system:
(2014) After a few thousand kilometers of testing, it was disassembled and coated azure anodize:
